Unknown blessings

I came across this quote early this morning. I read it, then sat with it a bit to let the words sink in. 

I could almost hear a distant wind, carrying those unknown blessings. Across plains and through mountain canyons. Rising and dipping with the breeze, like crisp fallen leaves.

Unknown blessings, dancing along dirt roads and city streets, washing up on doorsteps all around the globe. Millions of them . . . enough for everyone, everywhere.

So much faith and hope in this little quote.

A River Runs Through It

On my adventure into the woods the other day I took this photo of Grant Creek as it rolled over rock and stone. Last night I got to thinking of Norman Maclean's novella "A River Runs Through It," which reads a bit like poetry in many places. The photo reminded me of one of my favorite excerpts from the book, so I created this printable quote to tack on the fridge or frame up for the season. It may only be special to me, or to a few local readers who have dipped their toes in the Blackfoot River or cast a fly rod over its eddies, but if it speaks to you please feel free to download and print as well. 

Here is the full quote:

“Like many fly fishermen in western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise.

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.

I am haunted by waters.”

Creative Inspiration - Part Deux

Here's another piece of art I typeset earlier this year and have on the door to my office. I LOVE this. And it's so true. It's just hard to remember when you're in the midst of middle age and all those pesky "should've" thoughts keep slipping between the cracks in your brain.

Did you know that Norman Maclean started writing "A River Runs Through It" when he was 71 years old!? The book, his first work of fiction, was published in 1976, when he was 74 years old, and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Letters. It even went on to become a sweet movie, starring Brad Pitt, who really is quite a fine specimen . . . (whoops, I'm starting to go astray . . . now I'm thinking about how he was Tristan in "Legends of the Fall," and there's that one scene . . . oh my, sorry) My point is . . .

See? It's really NEVER too late.

Creative Inspiration

I first saw this list on Pinterest. I got super excited about it and I wanted to print a copy to put on my wall - but the versions I came across were small, with terrible resolution. A search for the original source/author of this fine list just fizzled out. Boy, things sure can get infinitely lost out there in the black hole of cyberspace. So I've re-typeset it and created a larger jpeg file. I now have it displayed on my office wall where it serves as a daily reminder of all the things I could be doing to get my creativity on.  Some I've been doing forever like #s 1, 2, 11, 30. And then some are SO hard (#s 6, 16, 18, 23, 29). And then there's that dang #24, which just typesetting it this way bothers me. I keep fighting an urge to fix it.
