The beginning of the end

Suddenly Autumn was at the height of perfection, every leaf an exquisitely painted gift, every breeze carrying a shivery wisp of sublime October. I was in pure, seasonal heaven.

Then along came a deeper chill, a gust of dense wind from the North, and the trees were shedding their leaves in waves. The air was alive with golds and reds.

And then . . . white.

Snowflakes!? Already?!

Piper is in Norweigen Elkhound bliss. She tries to eat the flakes as they fall. She SMILES. It's as though somewhere deep in her gut she knows she comes from long lines of dogs who love such weather.

For those of us who aren't as fond of the cold it means a little bit of sadness. Fall is my favorite time of year and it's beauty is so fleeting, you look away for a second and it's gone.

As I type this the evening is gathering and it is snowing like crazy. Huge, heavy flakes are blanketing the ground at an alarming rate. *sigh* It's all good though. November is silently beautiful and magic in its own way too. And the best news is that I finished Emma's blanket last night, not a day too early.

  1. Oh I would love some snow here!! Your pictures are gorgeous (as always) and I especially love the one of your dog Piper watching the snow! I wonder if my dogs remember the Montana snows.

    1. Isn't that a fun shot? Tonight she was out making snow angels, I kid you not. She's just crazy for the white stuff.

  3. All those beautiful colours and snow 'oh my' - though there is word in the UK that we may have some soon too. Though only a lot further North.

    Have a fabulous weekend

  4. What gorgeous autumn colours you have in Montana. And snow ... It's turned a little chilly here today and my friends in Scotland have had their first snow flurries of the season. No sign of the white stuff here yet, but there's plenty of time for that :)

    1. This is fairly early for us - sometimes we get a dusting around the last week of Oct but usually it;s closer to the end of November before the snow flies. It feels very premature to me. Hope we're not in for a long winter.

  5. Jenny, what beautiful photos and prose. Your blog makes me so homesick, even for chilly, snowy Missoula. Stay warm and cozy.

    1. Thanks Crystal. Heat's turned up. Hot beverages are being dispensed. I'm doing my best to stay cozy. You guys get snow in Reno, don't you?

  6. The blanket is beautiful, as are all your photos today Jenny. But I can't believe you've had snow so early! Does that always happen? It turned much colder here today, around 40°F, and there are rumours of snow on high ground but we wont see any for a while yet, I hope! The snow turns the British roads to an icy gridlock and I dread it, to be honest. We live on a hill which is tricky to get up and down when the weather is bad. Anyway, have a lovely weekend and wrap up warm! x

    1. This is quite early for us actually. Usually it's another month before the snow flies. Fortunately our city is equipped with all the gear to keep the roads pretty safe, but I would dread it if we lived on a big hill.

      Happy weekend to you too!

  7. Thick raindrops plopped down on me several days ago when I was out shopping...and I thought... snow? But we just had a little hail...a warning of what is to come. I am happy for Piper:) Thanks for taking the time to share some of the awesome sights around you, Jenny! xx from Gracie
